Curious George

 

Having a 4 year old son who watches this on TV every single day, I hear this song everyday and my son trying to sing it along. one of the things I like about living in the States, among many other, is that my children are growing up watchin...g some of the same TV shows as I did when I was their age.

 

Makes me think about the huge generation gap in Korea, where 'everythang' changes so fast. Being a musician, I can't help but think about the music, mainly two "thangs".

 

One, if you don't read music...so what? Try writing this music on page and imagine how ridiculous it would be. Two, to me, this is the most "American" as music gets.

 

I remember someone saying that the definition of American music (as opposed to that of Germany or Italy etc.) is "any music written in America". I couldn't agree more, and I love the diversity, variety and originality that all co-exist.

 매일 하루도 빠짐없이 이 TV  프로를 보는 네 살짜리 아들이 있다 보니, 나도 이 노래를 매일 듣게 된다. 이 노래를 따라 부르려고 애쓰는 녀석을 보며, 미국에서 사는 좋은 점들 중의 한 가지를 생각하게 된다. 그것은, 녀석들이 내가 저네들 만할 때 보고 자라던 똑같은 프로를 보면서 자란다는 것이다. 

모든 것이 너무나도 빠르게 변하는 한국에서는 세대간의 차이가 너무도 크다. 음악을 하는 사람이니 또 음악에 대해 생각하지 않을 수 없는데,  크게 두 가지다.

첫째는, 악보를 못읽으면 어때?  저걸 악보로 옮긴다는 게 오히려 더 웃기는 일이 아니겠는가 하는 것이다. 둘째로, 내가 보기에는, 다른 것들처럼 음악에서도, 이런 것이 가장 '미국적인' 것이라는 거다.   

누군가가 미국음악을 정의하기를, 독일이나 이태리 음악과는 반대로, , '미국에서 쓴 모든 음악'이라는 것이다. 나는 더 이상일 수 없이 그 정의에 동의한다. 나는 미국음악에 동시대적으로 공존하는 다양성과 포괄성,  그리고 독창성이 참 좋다. 는,
