행복한 빚 (A Happy Debt)/ 다나에비

늘 하던대로, 날씨도 화창하겠다(요즘, 혹심한 기후변화로 고생막심한 지구상의 모든 분들에겐 미안한 소리이기는 하지만), 다나를 태우고 레나를 픽업하러, 카파후루 에비뉴를 지나가고 있었다. 다나는 거리의 간판들을 읽기 시작했다. "하와이안 카레, 판다이스크레스,  AT&T..." 그러다가, 레너드 빵집이 내 눈에 들어 왔다. 다나에게 스넥 먹고 싶냐고 물었더니 그러겠단다. 이런 일은 전에 없던 일이다. 나는 늘 아이들을 집에 데려다 주고 얼른 학교로 돌아가기 바빴으니까.

그 가게는 말라사다빵보다 패이스트리가 맛있게 보인다고 생각하며 지나다녔지만 한 번도 맛볼 기회가 없었는데, 막상, 들어가 보니, 맛있어 보이는 게 어찌나 많은지, 고르기가  쉽지 않았다. 우리 뒤에 줄서 있던 사람들 몇을 앞세워 주고서야, 다나가  컵케익 한 개와 머핀 하나를 저와 레나 것으로 고르고, 나도 페이스트리 셋을 골랐다. 합계 10불 남짓.

꼭 주토피아의 점보 팝 장면에서 그랬던 것처럼, 아빠는 그제사, 지갑을 놓고 왔다는 것을 알아챘다.  그런 일은 논문쓰기를 시작한 후 꽤나 자주 있어 온 일. 여기저기 주머니를 뒤지다가 다나에게 아무래도 나갔다가 다시 와야 되겠다고 말하려는 참이었다.  바로 그 순간, 나이가 좀 지긋한 중년부부가 바로 우리 뒤에 서 있었는데, 그 부인이 우리의 빵값을 치러 주겠다고 말하는 것이 아닌가? "그러실 것 없어요. 우리가 갔다가 다시 오면 돼요."라고 나는 말했지만, 소용없었다. 그 부인은 빵값을 기어이 지불했고, 나는 어찌 할 바를 몰라서, " 감사합니다. 그럼, 명함이나, 그런 거 하나 주시겠어요? 제가 그걸 갚을 수 있게요."라고 말했다. 그러자, 그 부인이 말했다. "그러실 것 없어요. 우리가 그걸 돌려받고 싶지 않아요. 우리한테 되갚을(pay back) 게 아니라, 누군가, 도움이 필요한 사람을 만나면, 그 사람에게 갚아 주세요(pay forward). " 이러는 것이었다.

이런 경험은 처음이었다. 그 부인은 주변에 도움이 필요한 사람을 보면, 언제든지 도울 준비가 되어 있는 사람같이 보였다. 그 행동을 방해할 어떤 머뭇거림도 없이, 그 부인의 행동은 민첩했다. 차로 돌아 와서, 나는 방금 우리가 배운 이 귀한 레슨을 다나가 꼭 마음에 새기기를 바랬다. 다나가 명심할 수 있도록, 나는 그 부인의 행동이 우리와 우리가 살고 있는 사회에 어떤 의미를 가르쳐 주고 있는지를 열심히 설명했다. 뒷자리에 가만히 앉아서, 다나의 반응은 미지근했지만, 나는 이 아이가 나중에, 그 일을 또렷이 기억하게 될 것을 알 수 있었다. 

나는 오늘, 그 부인에게가 아니라, 내가 그런 경험을 할 수 있게 만들어 준 그 우연들에게, 행복한 빚을 졌다. 다나가 길거리의 간판을 읽기 시작했고, 그 때문에, 내가 레너드 빵집을 유심히 보게 되었고, 한 블럭을 지나갔지만 유턴을 해서 그 빵집으로 돌아갔고, 내 앞으로 몇 사람을 지나가게 해서 결국, 그 부부가 내 뒤에 서게 되었고, 거기에다가, 나는 지갑을 가져 오지 않았고...이런 모든 우연들이 오늘, 우리 가족이 그 맛있는 빚을 지게 해 준 것이었다. 나는 그 빚을 내 주변사람들과 나누어서, 그 부인의 투자가 더 많은 사람들에게 여러가지 방식으로 건너가게 하고 싶다. 여러분, 빚을 뒤로 갚지 말고, 앞으로 갚아 주세요.

A happy debt

As an everyday routine, the weather was beautiful (sorry to all suffering the harshest winter around the globe), and I was taking Kapahulu Ave. with Dana on the way to pick up Lena. Dana began to read signs on the road, “Hawaiian Curry, Panda Express, AT&T……” Then, Leonard’s Bakery grabbed my attention and I asked Dana if she wanted some snack, which had never happened before (because I was always in a hurry to take the kids home and rush back to my work). She said yes and I turned the car to Leonard’s.

For a long time, I’ve thought that their pastries must be better than their Malasadas (based on how they look) but had no chance to try them. It was not easy to choose what we wanted because there were so many delicious ones! I let several people after us in the line go ahead. Finally, Dana picked a cupcake and a muffin for her and Lena, and I picked three pastries. The total was 10 dollars and something.

Just like the Jumbo Pop scene in Zootopia, the dad then realized that he forgot to bring the wallet with him, which takes place pretty often since he started dissertating. I groped around my pockets and was about to tell Dana we’d come back later. Just at that moment, a mid-aged couple was standing behind us and the lady said she’d pay for us. Not paying attention to me saying, “No need, ma’am. We can come back later.”, she insisted to pay. Not knowing what to do, I said, “Thank you so much. Please give me your name card or something, so I can repay for it.” She said, “No, we don’t want you to pay back but please pay it forward. Help others in need.”

I’ve never experienced something like this before. It was like, she was always ready to help people around her and she reacted so fast that no hesitation could intervene. Back in the car, I wanted Dana to know what a precious lesson we’d just learned. I tried my best to imprint in her mind what just happened and what a deed like hers could mean to us and the community. Dana only showed a lukewarm reaction in the backseat but I could sense she’d remember the incident.

 

I am happily indebted not to the lady but to the coincidences that made it possible for us to experience it today. Dana’s reading signs primed me to attend to Leonard’s. I passed a block but returned to Leonard’s. I let the people behind us go ahead. Consequently, she happened to stand behind us, and I didn’t bring my wallet. Thanks to all these, our family earned the most delicious debt ever! I wanted to share the debt with you all, so that her investment goes all over the people around me in various ways.
