O, TO be in England

Now that April 's there,

And whoever wakes in England

Sees, some morning, unaware,

 

아, 영국에 돌아가고 싶어라.

거긴 지금 한창 사월,

누구든지 아침에 눈을 뜨면

알지도 못한 사이 어느 아침 갑자기,

 

 

That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf

Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,

While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough

In England—now!

 

나즈막한 나무가지와 덤불들이

느릅나무 기둥을 작은 잎새들로 둘러싸며

우거져 가고 있었음을 보게 되리라.

과수원의 나무가지 위에서는 푸른머리되새가

노래하고 있는 것을 보게 되리라,

지금쯤 영국에서는.

 

 

And after April, when May follows,

And the whitethroat builds, and all the swallows!

Hark, where my blossom'd pear-tree in the hedge

Leans to the field and scatters on the clover

 

아, 영국에는 이제

사월이 가고 오월이 되어

하얀 목을 한 참새들이 집을 짓고,

제비들도 지지배배 노래하겠네.

울타리 곁 내 배나무 가지들은 곷이 피어서

땅으로 늘어져 크로바 위로 뿌려지고 있겠네.

 

 

Blossoms and dewdrops—at the bent spray's edge—

That 's the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over,

Lest you should think he never could recapture

The first fine careless rapture!

 

아, 휘늘어진 가지 끝에 조롱조롱 매달린 꽃과 이슬방울들

영리한 개똥지바퀴 녀석은 그걸 보고 꼭 두 번씩 울지.

무심코 내지른 제 탄성을 반추할 줄도 모르는 놈이라고

우리가 오해라도 할까봐서 말이지.

 

 

And though the fields look rough with hoary dew,

All will be gay when noontide wakes anew

The buttercups, the little children's dower

—Far brighter than this gaudy melon-flower!

 

그 영롱하던 이슬도 스러져 들판이 거칠어 보일 즈음이면

한낮의 햇살이 살며시 다가와서 만물을 다시 생동케 하고.

꼬마들의 보물상자 같은 미나리아재비도 깨어나리라..

이런 야한 남국의 멜론꽃보다 훨씬 더 밝고 환한 빛깔로 말이지!
